Porter Credit Card Review: BMO VIPorter World Elite vs Mastercard

Published October 17, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026 · By the Best Canadian Credit Cards Editorial Team

Porter’s credit cards are issued by BMO and earn VIPorter points toward Porter flights. The BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard ($199 a year) adds a free checked bag for you and up to 8 guests on the same booking, while the BMO VIPorter Mastercard ($89 a year) is the cheaper way in. Here’s what each card earns, what the perks are worth, and who should get which.

Is the Porter credit card worth it?

  • BestBMO VIPorter World Elite, if you fly Porter a few times a year and check bags: free checked bags for your whole booking, 3 points per $1 on Porter, travel insurance with trip cancellation, and a companion pass at $50,000 spend.
  • OkayBMO VIPorter Mastercard: a lower $89 fee and 2 points per $1 on Porter, but no free bag and only 0.5 points per $1 on everyday spending.
  • AvoidIf you rarely fly Porter: points only pay Porter base fares (not taxes and fees), and both cards charge a 2.5% foreign transaction fee.

Tip: Both cards waive the annual fee in the first year, so you can test the perks for a year before deciding whether to keep the card.

What VIPorter points are worth

  • Flights only. You redeem points on Porter flights through your VIPorter account, and on some Air Transat and Alaska Airlines flights, subject to availability.
  • Base fare only. Points can’t pay taxes and fees. You can pay part of a base fare with points and the rest with your card.
  • No fixed chart. The points needed depend on the fare. Porter’s card page shows short flights starting from about 5,000 points one way, plus taxes.
  • About 1.5¢ a point. That’s BMO’s own estimate for flight redemptions, based on 2024 data. Your value depends on the fares you book, so our calculator also lets you use a more cautious 1¢.
  • No expiry while your card account is open and in good standing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Porter credit card worth it?

It’s worth it if you fly Porter a few times a year. The World Elite’s free checked bag covers you and up to 8 guests on the same booking. If your family checks bags, that perk alone can add up quickly. If you rarely fly Porter, a general travel or cash back card will usually earn more.

Who issues the Porter credit card?

BMO issues the Porter cards on the Mastercard network. They launched in March 2025 and come in three versions: the VIPorter Mastercard, VIPorter World Mastercard and VIPorter World Elite Mastercard.

Does the Porter credit card give a free checked bag?

Only the BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard does. The first checked bag is free for the primary cardholder, authorized users and up to 8 guests on the same booking. The VIPorter Mastercard doesn’t include a free bag.

What is the annual fee on the Porter credit card?

$199 for the World Elite and $89 for the VIPorter Mastercard. Both waive the primary card’s fee in the first year.

How much are VIPorter points worth?

BMO estimates about 1.5 cents a point when you redeem for Porter flights, based on 2024 data. Points pay the base fare only, not taxes and fees, so your value depends on the fare.

Can I use VIPorter points to pay taxes and fees?

No. Porter says points can only be applied to the base fare. You pay taxes and fees with another payment method.

Does the Porter credit card charge foreign transaction fees?

Yes. Both BMO VIPorter cards charge a 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases in other currencies.

How we checked: Fees, interest rates and the foreign transaction fee come from BMO’s VIPorter disclosure. Earn rates, caps and perks come from BMO’s benefit guides and Porter’s credit card page, and insurance from BMO’s insurance summaries. The 1.5¢ point value is BMO’s own estimate. We left out welcome offers because they change often. The calculator values points only; it doesn’t put a dollar value on bags or priority services.
