Not on a fixed date, but Scene+ can close your account after 24 months without earning or redeeming, and every point in a closed account is forfeited. The rule doesn’t apply while you have an open Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine card. Unregistered cards get only 6 months. Here’s how it works and how to keep your points.
The 24-month rule
Scene+’s program terms say it may close your account if your Scene+ card wasn’t used to earn, redeem or complete any other reward transaction in more than 24 consecutive months. If your account is closed, you forfeit all your points. The terms say Scene+ will give written notice, as the law requires, before closing an account.
Scene+’s help centre says the same in plain words: registered accounts close after 24 months without activity, and any points are forfeited when an account is closed for inactivity.
Who is protected
The 24-month rule doesn’t apply if you have a Scene+ Scotiabank product (a Scene+ ScotiaCard debit card or a Scene+ Scotiabank credit card) or a Scene+ Tangerine product that hasn’t been cancelled, with the account still open.
Two details matter:
- Link the card. The terms say points earned with a Scotiabank or Tangerine card don’t count as earning on your Scene+ account unless the card is linked to it. Scene+’s help centre also says accounts not linked to an active Scotiabank card close after 24 months without activity.
- Closing the card restarts the risk. Scotiabank says that if you close the card or bank account, your points stay in your Scene+ account, but they can then be lost after 24 months without activity.
Unregistered cards: 6 months
If you picked up a Scene+ card and never registered it, Scene+’s help centre says unregistered accounts close after 6 months without activity. Points on an unregistered card are also lost if the card is lost or stolen before you register it. Register it in the Scene+ app or on the Scene+ website to get the 24-month rule instead.

If your account was closed
Scene+’s help centre says that once an account is closed, you can’t earn or redeem on it and any points already earned are forfeited. Its suggestion is to open a new Scene+ account. Scene+ doesn’t describe a way to get points back from a closed account, so don’t let it get that far.
Other ways points can be lost
- Cancelling your membership cancels all your points right away.
- Points are personal. They can’t be sold or traded, and transfers between members are only allowed when Scene+ approves them and both accounts are active.
- When a member dies, the terms allow points to be transferred to heirs or beneficiaries who are, or become, Scene+ members. Scene+ can ask for documents.
Using your points
At Cineplex and on Scene+ Travel, 100 points take $1 off, so each point is worth 1¢. Some partners set a minimum, usually between 100 and 1,000 points. A balance of 12,500 points is worth about $125. Planning a movie night? See how many Scene+ points you need for a movie.
