Marriott Bonvoy Status Levels Explained: Silver, Gold, Platinum and More

Published October 18, 2026 · Updated October 18, 2026 · By the Best Canadian Credit Cards Editorial Team

Marriott Bonvoy has five elite levels: Silver at 10 nights a year, Gold at 25, Platinum at 50, Titanium at 75 and Ambassador at 100 (plus US$23,000 in spending). Higher levels bring more bonus points, later checkout, room upgrades and, from Platinum, lounge access and breakfast. With the Amex Bonvoy card, you start at Silver and get 15 night credits a year, so 10 paid nights are enough for Gold.

Which Marriott status is worth chasing?

  • BestGold Elite, if you have the Amex Bonvoy card: 10 paid nights plus the card’s 15 night credits, or $30,000 a year on the card, gets you 2 p.m. checkout, room upgrades and 25% more points.
  • OkayPlatinum Elite, if you travel a lot: at 50 nights you get lounge access and breakfast at brands with lounges, plus 4 p.m. checkout.
  • Check firstSilver on its own: 10% more points and priority late checkout are nice, but the Amex Bonvoy card gives you Silver anyway.

Tip: Award stays booked with points count as nights toward status, so free nights from the card help you qualify.

Marriott says all elite levels get its Ultimate Reservation Guarantee: if a hotel can’t honour your reservation, Marriott pays for you to stay nearby and compensates you. Upgrades and late checkout are subject to availability, and the 4 p.m. checkout may not be guaranteed at resort and convention hotels.

How the Amex Bonvoy card gets you status

  • Silver Elite comes with the personal Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card.
  • 15 Elite Night Credits every calendar year, on both the personal and business cards. You must be the main cardholder.
  • Gold Elite when you spend $30,000 on the card before your annual reset date, or when you stay 10 qualifying paid nights in a calendar year (10 nights + 15 credits = 25).

For most people, that makes Gold the realistic target: two or three trips a year, or putting most of your spending on the card. See our Amex Bonvoy card review for the card’s fees, free night and welcome bonus.

Lifetime status

Marriott’s terms say points in Lifetime Elite accounts aren’t currently subject to expiry, though Marriott may change that in the future.

Getting Gold through Aeroplan

If you link your Marriott Bonvoy and Aeroplan accounts, Marriott gives complimentary Gold Elite to Aeroplan Super Elite, 75K and 50K members. Going the other way, Marriott Ambassador and Titanium members get Aeroplan 25K status. Marriott says this status is generally valid for at least 12 months and can’t be combined with other qualifying activity to reach a higher Marriott tier. More in our Marriott points to Aeroplan guide.

Tips for reaching status faster

  • Count award stays. Marriott’s terms say stays booked with points earn Elite Night Credits too.
  • Use the card’s 15 night credits. They cut Gold from 25 nights to 10.
  • Put big expenses on the card if you’re close to $30,000 a year, which gets Gold with no stays at all.
  • Don’t buy points for status. Marriott’s terms say purchased points don’t count toward elite status.
