How Much Are Marriott Bonvoy Points Worth? (Calculator)

Published October 18, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026 · By the Best Canadian Credit Cards Editorial Team

Marriott Bonvoy points don’t have a fixed value. What a point is worth depends on how you use it, and on the hotel and dates when you book a stay. To find out, divide the cash price of a stay by its points price. A $250 night that costs 35,000 points works out to about 0.71¢ a point. The same points used for gift cards are worth less than 0.3¢. Use the calculator below with a real stay you’re looking at.

How to get the most from Bonvoy points

  • BestFree nights where the cash price is high: the higher a stay’s cash price compared with its points price, the more each point is worth. Five award nights in a row get one night free.
  • OkayAirline miles, in blocks of 60,000: 60,000 points become 25,000 Aeroplan points with the transfer bonus. Smaller transfers get only 1 mile per 3 points.
  • Check firstAvoid gift cards and merchandise: a $50 gift card costs 17,500 points, which is under 0.3¢ a point.

Tip: Check the points price on a few dates. Award prices vary, so the same hotel can cost fewer points on another night.

How to work out what a free night is worth

  1. Search your hotel and dates on Marriott’s site and note the full cash price, including taxes.
  2. Search again with points and note the points price for the same room.
  3. Divide the cash price by the points. Multiply by 100 to get cents per point.

Example: a hotel night costs $250 or 35,000 points. $250 ÷ 35,000 × 100 = 0.71¢ a point. At that rate, 70,000 points are worth about $500 in hotel stays.

A useful rule: if the value comes out at or below about 0.3¢ a point, you’d do just as well with gift cards. Try different dates or a different hotel before you book. Resort fees may be charged on top, so include them when you compare.

Transferring Bonvoy points to Aeroplan and other airlines

Marriott lets you move points to dozens of airline programs. For most of them, including Air Canada Aeroplan, 3 points become 1 mile, and Marriott adds 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points you transfer.

Marriott pointsAeroplan pointsMiles per Marriott point
30,00010,0000.33
60,00025,0000.42
120,00050,0000.42
240,000 (the daily maximum)100,0000.42
  • You can transfer 3,000 to 240,000 points a day.
  • For most airlines, the name on your airline account must match your Marriott account.
  • The 60,000-point bonus doesn’t apply to American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles or Delta SkyMiles. United MileagePlus gets 10,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points instead.
  • Air New Zealand converts at 200 points to 1 mile.

Transfers are best in 60,000-point blocks. Below that, you lose the bonus and get only a third of a mile per point. Use our Marriott to Aeroplan converter to check your numbers.

Moving Amex points into Marriott

If you have an American Express Membership Rewards card, such as the Cobalt, you can transfer points to Marriott Bonvoy at 1,000 Amex points = 1,200 Marriott points. Amex says the minimum is 1,000 points, in steps of 100, and transfers can take up to 48 hours.

Don’t use Marriott as a route to Aeroplan, though. Amex points move to Aeroplan at 1:1, so 1,000 Amex points become 1,000 Aeroplan points. Sent through Marriott, the same 1,000 Amex points become 1,200 Marriott points and then only about 400 to 500 Aeroplan points.

Should you buy Marriott points?

Marriott sells points, up to 100,000 a calendar year for yourself or another member, and sometimes offers discounts on points tied to a recent stay. Prices change, so check the price per point on Marriott’s site and compare it with the value of the stay you want. Buying makes sense only to top up a specific booking where your value per point is higher than what you pay for each point.

Earning Bonvoy points with the Amex card

The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card earns 5 points per $1 at Marriott hotels and 2 points per $1 on everything else, and adds a yearly free night worth up to 35,000 points. At 0.71¢ a point, 2 points per $1 is about 1.4% back toward hotel stays. When we last checked, new cardholders could also earn up to 70,000 welcome points. See our Amex Bonvoy card review for the full details and a calculator.

Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?

Yes, if your account goes quiet. Marriott’s terms say you need qualifying activity at least once every 24 months to keep your points. That includes earning or redeeming points, buying points, a qualifying stay, or converting points with a partner. Gifting or receiving points from another member doesn’t count. After 24 months with no activity, all your points are forfeited and can’t be reinstated.

Using a Marriott Bonvoy credit card regularly keeps your points safe, since every purchase earns points. Points in Lifetime Elite accounts aren’t currently subject to expiry.

How to get more value from Bonvoy points

  • Compare cash and points prices on a few dates before you book.
  • Book 5 nights in a row with points to get one free.
  • Transfer to airlines in 60,000-point blocks to get the 5,000-mile bonus.
  • Skip gift cards and merchandise. They give the lowest value.
  • Keep your account active with at least one earn or redemption every 24 months.
