RBC's Air Travel Redemption Schedule

Avion Elite cardholders can book flights at a fixed number of points, as long as the ticket price, before taxes and fees, is at or under the maximum for its band. These are one-way economy figures from Avion Rewards; round trips cost double.

BandPoints (one-way)Maximum ticket priceBest value per point
Quick getaways7,500$1752.33¢
Explore North America17,500$3752.14¢
Vacation destinations22,500$4502.00¢
Unforgettable escapes27,500$5502.00¢
Visit Europe32,500$6502.00¢
See the world50,000$1,0002.00¢

Where each band goes, per Avion Rewards:

  • Quick getaways: within your province or territory, or to a neighbouring one or a neighbouring U.S. state.
  • Explore North America: anywhere in Canada or the U.S., except Hawaii and Alaska.
  • Vacation destinations: Western Canada to Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska, or Eastern Canada to Bermuda, Central America and the Caribbean.
  • Unforgettable escapes: Eastern Canada to Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska, or Western Canada to Bermuda, Central America and the Caribbean.
  • Visit Europe: major Canadian and U.S. gateways to Europe.
  • See the world: major gateways to Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and South America.

"Best value" assumes the fare equals the maximum. RBC says schedule flights start at 7,500 points for a short one-way economy flight. Taxes and fees are paid separately, and can be paid with points.

Worked example: schedule or pay with points?

Say a one-way flight in the "Explore North America" band costs $360 before taxes. These are example prices, not a live quote.

  • On the schedule: 17,500 points. Value: $360 ÷ 17,500 = 2.06¢ a point.
  • Paying with points at 1¢: 36,000 points for the same fare.
  • The schedule saves you 18,500 points.

If the fare were $190, the schedule would still cost 17,500 points, about 1.09¢ each, so paying at 1¢ (19,000 points) would be close. The schedule wins when the fare is near the band's maximum. Check any booking with our cents per point calculator.

Transferring Avion points to airlines

Avion Elite points can be converted to airline programs. RBC lists these ratios:

ProgramRatio
British Airways Club (Avios)1 Avion point = 1 Avios
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles1 Avion point = 1 Asia Mile
WestJet Rewards1 Avion point = 1 WestJet point
American Airlines AAdvantage10 Avion points = 7 miles

Transfers need a minimum of 1,000 to 10,000 points depending on the program, can take time, and can't be reversed. Avion Premium cardholders can convert to WestJet only. See RBC Avion credit cards for current terms.

How to get more value from Avion points

  • Use the schedule when the fare is high. Compare the fare with the band's maximum before booking.
  • Pay with points at 1¢ when the fare is low. Cheap flights and hotels are better value at the flat rate.
  • Use the 2¢ business-class rate if you'd buy a premium cabin anyway.
  • Watch for transfer bonuses to British Airways, which have appeared from time to time.
  • Compare cash-like options with travel. Before paying down your balance with points, check its rate against the 1¢ you get on travel.

Do Avion points expire?

No, as long as your RBC credit card account stays open. RBC says points are forfeited 12 months after the account is closed. Source: RBC.
