Published October 17, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026 · By the Best Canadian Credit Cards Editorial Team

A WestJet point is worth 1 cent when you use it on the base fare of a WestJet flight: 100 points take $1 off. On taxes, fees and extras after booking, it’s worth a little less, at 105 to 115 points per $1. If you still think in WestJet dollars, 1 WestJet dollar became 100 points, so its value didn’t change. Use the calculator to see what your points are worth.

You can also use points on partner airline flights booked on westjet.com, for the base fare, surcharges, taxes and fees. Points can’t be exchanged for cash.

Member Exclusive fares are a separate case. They’re private fares for WestJet Rewards members, they must be paid entirely in points (except taxes), and seats are limited. WestJet doesn’t publish a points-per-dollar rate for them, so compare the points price with the cash fare for the same flight. Divide the cash fare by the points, then multiply by 100 to get the cents per point.

WestJet dollars to points: what changed

WestJet replaced WestJet dollars with WestJet points on April 30, 2025. Every WestJet dollar converted to 100 WestJet points. Since 100 points take $1 off a base fare, the value stayed the same: the numbers just got bigger.

Worked example

Say you have 70,000 points and want a WestJet flight with a $600 base fare and $150 in taxes and fees.

  • Put 60,000 points on the base fare: that covers the full $600.
  • The other 10,000 points can go toward the taxes. At 105 to 115 points per $1, that’s about $87 to $95 off.
  • You pay the rest of the taxes, roughly $55 to $63, in cash.

If you’d used all 70,000 points on taxes and extras instead, they’d cover less. Base fare first is the simple rule.

How you earn WestJet points

When you fly WestJet, you earn points on the base fare plus surcharges, seats, bags and upgrades (not taxes). How many depends on your status:

The two RBC WestJet credit cards earn points on everyday spending:

CardAnnual feeEarn rate
WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard$1392 points per $1 on WestJet flights and vacations and on eligible grocery, gas, EV charging, transit and rideshare; 1.5 per $1 on everything else
WestJet RBC Mastercard$391.5 points per $1 on WestJet flights and vacations and on eligible restaurants, delivery and streaming; 1 per $1 on everything else

At 1 cent a point, 1.5 points per $1 is like 1.5% back toward WestJet base fares. The World Elite card also has an annual companion voucher once you spend $5,000 in a year, which is a separate benefit from points. Card details change, so confirm them on WestJet’s or RBC’s site before you apply. To compare WestJet points with other programs, see our RBC Avion points value and TD Rewards points value guides.

How to get more value from WestJet points

  • Spend points on the base fare first. It’s the best fixed rate, at 100 points per $1.
  • Pay taxes in cash if you can. Taxes cost 105 to 115 points per $1.
  • Check Member Exclusive fares. Sometimes the points price is a better deal than the cash fare. Do the math before you book.
  • Keep your account active. Earn, redeem or transfer points at least once every 24 months.
  • Don’t cancel your membership with points in it. Cancelling forfeits all your points.

Keeping your points active

No, as long as your account stays active. WestJet’s terms say an account stays active if you earn, redeem, transfer or convert points in the past 24 months. If it goes 24 months with no activity, WestJet can deactivate it, and the points expire. Some promotional points can have their own expiry date. Details in do WestJet points expire?
