WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard
This is the card most WestJet flyers should look at first. The earn rate is solid: 2 points per $1 on WestJet flights, WestJet Vacations and Sunwing Vacations, and on groceries, gas, EV charging, public transit and rideshare. Everything else earns 1.5 points per $1, which is better than most travel cards’ base rate.
The perks are what make it worth $139:
- Free first checked bag for you and up to 8 guests on the same reservation, when you pay for the ticket with the card and your WestJet Rewards ID is on the booking. RBC values one bag at $45 each way.
- Companion voucher for a round-trip ticket from $119 (up to $499 depending on destination and fare, plus taxes and fees). You get the first one after your first purchase, then one each year you spend $5,000. RBC says cardholders saved an average of $625 using it.
- Voucher exchange: swap the voucher for 30% off one base fare, a $200 credit on a WestJet Vacations or Sunwing package, or two lounge passes.
- Status help: every $5,000 you spend adds $200 toward WestJet Rewards tier status.
- Insurance: out-of-province emergency medical, trip cancellation and interruption, flight and baggage delay, rental car collision, mobile device, and purchase protection.
The current welcome offer is up to 70,000 WestJet points ($700 in travel): 30,000 after your first purchase, 30,000 more when you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months, and 10,000 after your first year. You must apply by November 18, 2026.
WestJet RBC Mastercard
The cheaper card at $39 a year. It earns 1.5 points per $1 on WestJet flights and vacations, and on restaurants, food delivery, digital subscriptions, streaming and digital games. Everything else earns 1 point per $1.
You still get a companion voucher, from $199 plus taxes and fees, after your first purchase and then each year you spend $2,500. You can also exchange it for 25% off one base fare or 5,000 WestJet points. It has no free checked bags and no travel medical or trip cancellation insurance, but it does include travel accident, rental car, mobile device, delayed baggage and purchase protection.
The current welcome offer is up to 15,000 WestJet points ($150): 5,000 after your first purchase and 10,000 more when you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months. Apply by November 18, 2026.
Is the World Elite worth the extra $100?
For most people who fly WestJet with family or a partner, yes. Two people checking a bag on one round trip saves about $180, more than the fee difference on its own. The World Elite’s companion voucher also starts $80 lower than the Mastercard’s.
On points alone, the World Elite makes up its extra $100 fee once you spend about $850 a month on groceries, gas and transit, or about $1,700 a month on other everyday purchases. The Mastercard only wins if you rarely fly, spend mostly at restaurants, or don’t meet the World Elite’s $80,000 income requirement.
What to watch for
- Foreign transaction fee: both cards add 2.5% to purchases in other currencies. For spending abroad, see our best travel credit cards for no-fee options.
- Categories follow store codes: a store that sells groceries may not count as a grocery store. RBC uses each merchant’s category code. See merchant category codes.
- Voucher spending minimum: after the first year, you only get a new companion voucher if you hit $5,000 (World Elite) or $2,500 (Mastercard) in a year.
- Interest: 20.99% on purchases (21.99% on cash advances in Quebec, 22.99% elsewhere). Pay in full to keep the rewards worth it.
RBC’s pages say WestJet points don’t expire, but WestJet’s own terms have an inactivity rule, so keep using the card. See do WestJet points expire.
